The third installment in the series about Dublin investigator Ed Loy has the complexity and depth to stand on its own. Rough and street savvy, Loy is hired by a priest to find Patrick Hutton, a jockey who disappeared amid questionable circumstances ten years earlier. Narrator Stanley Townsend adds to Loy's dark disposition with a natural delivery of raw language and Loy's patchy awareness of alcohol-fueled fights. The various Irish and English voices are easily distinguishable, thanks to Townsend's deft reading. Townsend's skill is well employed for the extended first-person points of view of several characters, especially in the closing scene in which the shocking secrets of a powerful family are revealed.
