Fans of Jardine's Bob Skinner mysteries will be satisfied with this eighteenth installment, and newcomers will also enjoy the character development and plot twists. DCC Skinner is shaken when the circumstances of a new murder in Edinburgh—a young, female artist found naked with her body peacefully composed—strongly resemble cases that were closed when the suspected serial killer was found dead. Narrator James Bryce portrays Skinner's skill and self-assurance, developed over years of experience on the force, but he really shines when Skinner's confidence is shattered by evidence that points to HIM. Bryce's variety of Scots and English voices adds needed cohesion to the large cast of characters in this novel, and his lively narration enhances dry descriptions of police procedures.
