Jack Garrett is skilled at characterization and regional accents, and his precise yet casual pacing makes listening to him a pleasure. Set during the Texas War for Independence, this Western is brought to life through the eyes of two brothers. Garrett conveys the innocence and practicality of Tennessee heroes Josh and Thomas Buckalew. Characters such as Texan and Mexican bandits, soldiers, and settlers are individually portrayed, and even the story's love interests, Teresa and Maria, are appropriately enticing. The horror of the battle scenes is described inoffensively. Overall, Garrett reads competently and responsively, manipulating his vocal expressions to excellent effect.
