THE WOMAN AND THE APE

Reviewers agree that Peter Høeg's latest novel is a smashing, engrossing, romantic adventure. Beautiful Madeline Burden rescues an "ape" from laboratory experimentation, teaches him to talk and falls in love (yes, really!) with him. Together they set out to warn us all of the ecological disaster that threatens our civilization. Jenny Sterlin is top notch, by turns menacing, calculating, threatening and sensual. Her most challenging moment comes when the ape utters his first words. His voice is wholly convincing. Høeg has taken many risks writing this fable cum love story; Sterlin is able to swing the listener from the heights of a tree top aerie to the depths of our relentless quest to subdue the earth and dominate it.
