Hindered by the conniving of Cornelius Donner; assisted by the mutt, Burnt Paw; and inspired by the Princess of Dawson, Jamie Dunavant--Jason Hawthorn follows his dreams. Boyd Gaines narrates with the enthusiasm of a determined 18-year-old set on recovering his family sawmill and living "life on his own hook." Discouraged at times, elated at others, Gaines keeps the tension of the race alive and, at the same time, shares the adventure with immediacy.
