The easiest way to characterize these mystery stories set in medieval England is to note their similarity in content and tone to Ellis Peters’ Brother Cadfael series. For audiobook listeners, the resemblance is heightened by the fact that Stephen Thorne has recorded several of the Cadfael novels. Thorne is a seasoned professional, secure in his craft and an effortless pleasure to listen to. His reading has complete conviction, yet it never loses touch with the fact that this is entertainment, not high art.
