Set in the picturesque Little Snake Hills of Saskatchewan, the town of Juliet offers an array of quirky characters, vibrant imagery, and profound warmth. Cassandra Campbell performs Dianne Warren's lyrical prose with insight that allows the beauty and brutality of the landscape and the simplicity of living on the land to speak for themselves. Her pensive, quiet voice, soft with drama, exudes a gentle force that blends laconic memories with vigorous power. However, the novel’s parts are inexpertly linked; it works more aptly as connected short stories—but it doesn’t suffer from its unhinged properties. Campbell shares the ordinary lives of various characters over the course of one typical summer day. Themes include love of the land and aspects of horse culture, both expressed in a cadence reminiscent of eons of storytelling.
