Fifteen-year-old Blake has a gorgeous girlfriend, a loving family, a best female friend who shares his love for photography, and a penchant for making those around him laugh. MacLeod Andrews introduces Blake with energetic tones, making his repartee with friends and family convincing. Andrews also clearly differentiates Blake’s inner conversations with an imaginary ground control crew—whom he addresses as “Houston”—a device that dramatizes Blake’s feelings of helplessness and confusion when he finds his relationships becoming more complicated. Andrews’s depiction of Blake’s demanding girlfriend contrasts pointedly with the timidity of his platonic female friend who truly needs his help.
