There isn’t a Girl Scout troop in the Calle de las Flores, the Reno-area trailer park where Rory Hendrix lives with her mama, but that can’t keep Rory from making herself an honorary Scout. The Girl Scout Handbook provides hints to life outside the Calle, a life that Rory hopes to one day achieve, breaking her family’s cycle of poverty and early motherhood. Tupelo Hassman, author and narrator of GIRLCHILD, becomes Rory completely. She embodies Rory’s persona perfectly: naïve yet forced to grow up far too fast, optimistic even when constantly surrounded by heartache.
