SHOOTING IN THE DARK

John Baker's compelling book is set in the north of England, in York, where the accents are distinctive. Narrator Garrett splendidly introduces Baker's well-drawn characters, including a blind woman; new parents, reveling in parenthood; an author who likes to really know his subjects; and PI Sam Turner, who carries pain but helps those worse off than himself.
