Edinburgh's Deputy Chief Constable Bob Skinner has a chaotic personal life; having just broken off an engagement, he's stopped seeing a co-worker and has just met a young, appealing neighbor. He’s also coping with a shortage of police manpower for the investigation of a series of grisly murders that all have some relationship to his amateur soccer league. These two plot points will coincide to lead him into some dangerous situations, making this a white-knuckle thriller. James Bryce reads in a thoroughly Scottish brogue, with power and force for Skinner and his colleagues and a subtle gentleness for the women in his life.
