COLD PURSUIT

San Diego Homicide Detective McMichael confronts his family's violent past while investigating the bludgeoning death of an old man who many years earlier shot McMichael's grandfather, setting off a family feud. Patrick G. Lawlor's voice blends so well it is sometimes as if the story is telling itself. His characterizations are subtle and apt; his McMichael--sincere and appealing--is especially authentic. McMichael's friendship with a cop in custody for corruption and his attraction to an intriguing murder suspect provide moral and philosophical underpinnings to a plot so filled with stakeouts, shoot- 'em-ups, and chase scenes as to strain credulity. Readers willing to overlook the implausible will enjoy. E.S.
