In the close-knit community of Endfield, 14-year-old Ceelie Wheeler has enjoyed snowball fights, fishing trips, and "like family" relationships with the townspeople. When Boston authorities decide to turn the valley into a reservoir, everyone must relocate. As she leaves her childhood home behind, Ceelie must sort out her feelings about her stubborn grandmother, her own competition with her mother, and the difference between a crush and deeper love. Julia Gibson is a wonderful narrator for this kind of character. Thoughtful, gentle, and having just the right pitch for a teenaged girl, Gibson makes this Depression-era story come alive with emotion. J.M.S.
