Muller's short story "Deceptions" is an excellent view of premier P.I. Sharon McCone at work as she unravels the mysterious assumed suicide of a wealthy young woman. Jean Reed Bahle's matter-of-fact tone works well, adding flesh and sinew to the McCone character. Hess's quick peek into a murder that literally turns up at bookseller Claire Malloy's feet is a delight to listen to even though the tones of narrator Sandra Burr sometimes sound saccharine. This duo of stories is a great value and a wonderful glimpse of two popular, but very different, sleuths. D.T.H. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN 97]
