A tone of poignancy and deep melancholy pervades these ten stories of country life in Northern Ireland. One gentle story relates a young boy's rite of passage; another magically transports the listener back to the Donegal of a grown man's childhood for one last game; and still another charmingly reveals the almost glacial pace of social change in Ireland. While Donnelly's languid style of reading complements the slow development of these stories, his too-frequent pauses in the middle of sentences may distract some listeners from the often magical story elements.
