Zoe Boehm, a London-based private detective, is searching for a Motown aficionado who preys on women with broken hearts. The author presents Zoe as someone whose emotions have ceased to function. As Zoe "jumps the invisible ditch that borders the straight and narrow” in order to solve the murders of a 9-year-old purse-snatcher and two unrelated middle-aged women, Anna Bentinck's narration becomes vivid enough to entice an audio listener into a second savory listen. The plot is engaging from beginning to end, the prose polished to a fine sheen, and the descriptions vivid. The characters are also engrossing, especially that of an ostrich named Gwyneth, who is unforgettable. K.A.T. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine [Published: DEC 05/ JAN 06]
