David Rintoul keeps listeners hooked on this second of Fossum's Norwegian crime novels to be translated into English. Inspector Sejer investigates two misdeeds, a bank robbery and the murder of a forest-dwelling old woman, when the two co-mingle. Each of the characters is a distinct individual in Rintoul's reading; he offers believable renderings of men, women, and even children. He is particularly adept at conveying various emotions in a moving, involving way that doesn't overdo.
