With a stiff upper lip, Simon Vance tells the story of an American who matches wits with a Nazi spy to get information about the forthcoming Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. And that stiff lip is the only problem with Vance' s reading. While he's absolutely believable as a Briton or German, his attempts to characterize Tom Wall, the Yankee hero of the story, fail. Ross wrote Wall's character to speak with an American accent. Hearing Wall lapse into a proper English accent is just too much. Still, the story is exceptionally intriguing. Though it's fiction, you're left to ask yourself--what if? A.L.H. © AudioFile 2007, Portland, Maine [Published: APR/ MAY 07]
