THE BIRDCAGE

June Barrie offers a measured, sensitive reading of this English novel about the ways in which family love and misunderstanding affect the generations. Barrie has a textured, deep voice that suits female and male characters equally well. Without attempting dramatic vocal characterizations, she creates a range of personalities whose voices are believable and different enough to tell apart. In between the dialogue, her well-paced narration moves the stately plot forward clearly and quickly enough that it never becomes too slow.
