LETTING GO

American culture's emphasis on freedom and narcissism overpowers the true principles of Christianity, according to Franciscan priest, teacher, and author Richard Rohr in a 1987 recorded lecture. Our culture is not one of curiosity or spiritual depth; thus, we are offered little encouragement to let go of consumerism and materialistic trappings. Rohr says we can free ourselves from the compulsion to buy--to add things to who we are instead of subtracting--by letting go and experiencing true spiritual surrender and service. Richard Rohr's earnest spirituality is captured nicely in this recording. His fresh voice makes his invitation, difficult as it is, feel more like an exciting quest instead of a painful sacrifice.
