This story of revolution in a fictional South American country retains its relevance. English adventurer Harvey Landon accepts the offer of a job to transport Ramon Arturo Alvarez, who plans a political coup. During their journey they survive a hurricane, an earthquake, and a volcano, and finally come face to face with the violence of the current regime. Terry Wale's performance rises above any plot weaknesses as he reads in a clear, clipped manner and deftly manages the many accents. He excels when he tackles the gorgeous descriptive passages, in which his lyricism and phrasing are so rhythmic they become musical. His tone of calm fatalism doesn't detract at all from the suspense. S.S.R. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/ JUL 06]
