SUFFICIENT GRACE

Cynthia Darlow’s performance of this beautiful story of a woman living with schizophrenia dazzles the listener. Darlow’s throaty voice carries the narrative along as she also creates expert vocal characterizations. She applies a simple Southern accent to protagonist Gracie and gives a unique airy tone to the internal voices that urge Gracie to leave home and pursue art. Mama Toot, Gracie’s savior, receives a stunning vocalization that keeps the listener laughing. As the large cast of characters and their intertwined relationships unfold, Darlow is triumphant in bringing to life such diverse individuals as African-American preachers, a stuttering psychiatrist, and a charming boy.
