John Hart's novel weaves a dark, compelling tale of superstition, broken families, murder, and lost children. Scott Sowers's flat tone and measured pace are initially off-putting, seeming to be an odd choice for such an emotionally demanding story. However, as the book progresses and the horrific events build, Sowers’s delivery becomes more and more appropriate. The scenes and characters are so powerful on their own that his understated presentation is highly effective. He still manages to give the characters depth and distinction with subtle modifications of pace, tone, and degree of soft Carolina drawl. This is a difficult story to listen to—but an impossible story to put down. M.O.B. © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine [Published: JUNE 2009]
