For fans of Richard Nixon and students of Watergate, the third volume of Ambrose's biography is both a welcome and exhaustive piece of research. For the rest of mankind it is merely exhausting. Ambrose treats us to a day-by-day briefing of Nixon's presidency until his resignation. It is an agonizing twelve tapes. The fourteen years that follow concentrate on Nixon's books, outings and trips abroad--which Ambrose generously calls his "recovery." John MacDonald's reading is serious and well-paced; his tone reflects Ambrose's sympathetic portrayal of Nixon with the lightly dramatic quality of a radio journalist.
