LEVIATHAN WAKES

Narrator Jefferson Mays delivers an old-fashioned space opera. After colonizing all the planets, humanity is working on star travel. A drifting spaceship harbors dangerous secrets, and several forces battle each other while a few ordinary people do their best just to stay alive. Mays narrates with empathy, adding to the characters’ emotional depth, and subtle accents help differentiate the cast. Mays, a veteran of mystery novels, gives his delivery a more hard-boiled tone than is common for sci-fi, a style that adds pulp appeal.
