THE WANDERER

The late journeyman science fiction writer Fritz Leiber weaves a tale of tidal disaster and visiting planets from hyperspace. While this is good science fiction, the characters are shallow, their personal backgrounds not described. Dietz is a methodical reader; he succeeds in distinguishing characters but rarely departs from a painfully slow pace. Occasional noises distract, perhaps an inevitable side effect of the sharp audio quality. This Hugo Award-winning book now seems stereotypical and dated. D.W.
