New neighbors usually bring change, and that is certainly the case when Patsy and Jim move into the house nearest to Miss Slade of Blackberry Bottom. Her hermit-like living style, shabby appearance, and unsettling patched eye have led the neighborhood to fantasies of a witch in their midst. Yet, through Patty and Jim's persistence, true identities are revealed, and friendships are forged. June Whitfield is a friendly narrator. She never lets the "witch" or the tramp be too frightful. She adds just enough accent and dialect to give the flavor of the village and countryside--as compared to Miss Slade's cultured voice. Whitfield champions the children and their curiosity toward and desire to befriend an eccentric and exciting old woman. While Dick King-Smith's beloved animals provide the backdrop, this enjoyable story focuses mainly on its people. A.R. © AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine [Published: JUN/JUL 01]
