TROUT SUMMER

There must be a million kids' books about adjusting to divorce. Yet Conly manages to find something new in that tired subject by giving Shana Allen and her younger brother, Cody, a chance to work things out without adult interference or friends' support. The Allen kids spend a summer all alone in a rustic cabin with a leaky roof and a threatening old codger living just a short haul up river. Christina Moore inhabits Shana in the way that the best readers always seem to become the character and gives Cody a workable young boy's voice (though he seems at times to be the older sibling). With everything from a perilous white-water journey to a helicopter rescue, this book is sure to grab any listener with the ever more challenging rapids of adventure. M.C.
