THE PRICE OF LOVE

by | Read by Judith Boyd

Romantic Fiction • 13 hrs. • Unabridged • © 1999

In turn-of-the-century England, illegitimate, impoverished Kate McGlory falls in love with a rich shipping magnate. Her friends and family strongly object to the match, but handsome and kind Jack Courtney couldn't have any but the highest motives, could he? Judith Boyd matches her sweet delivery to the syrupy story line. Her light, cultured voice overflows with empathy for the young shop girl and her multitude of brothers. Boyd's characterizations often blur, with the younger and sympathetic women, as well as the children, portrayed in high-pitched, squeaky tones. The brash and older women, and most of the men, are presented with a deeper voice and stronger dialect. All told, text and performance are about evenly matched. R.P.L.
