Alexandra Warren and her daughter, Katy, are traveling back to England after the death of her husband and a long sojourn in Australia. Their ship is attacked, and they're captured by pirates, who sell the women into slavery. Gavin Elliott, an idealist and bold shipping baron, sees Alexandra in the slave market and wagers his freedom for hers in a bizarre series of contests with her owner.
