This English translation of Stürmer's work gives the American listener a European view of Germany. As the author takes geographic considerations into account, we see how much events in Germany affect all of Europe, as well as how much the establishment of a single German state in 1870 transformed traditional European politics. It's all a fascinating, but by no means thorough, account of this near half-century. Hecht's voice is deep, resonant, and authoritative. M.T.F.
