Narrator David Thorpe excels with a fast-paced mystery that moves from 1983 to current times. When an apartment cleaner finds a severed hand in a freezer, Detective Inspector Jake Porter and Detective Sergeant Nick Styles tackle a thirty-year-old murder. Thorpe commendably presents the fine text, realistic dialogue, and much needed humor. Listeners join the investigators as they painstakingly identify Natasha Barclay, meet men obsessed by money, and encounter two bent cops who obstruct the case. Thorpe deftly conveys the personal and professional relationships between Styles and Porter, and his best creations are Mary Barclay, the vengeful mother, and James Bolton, a thug whose raspy utterances cause chills as he handles everyone's dirty work. After many twists and turns, the final reveal is almost a relief. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: JUNE 2019]
