This saga, beginning with the childhood days of Marcus Tullius Cicero and Julius Caesar, is a wonderful portrait of the people, as well as the culture, of that time. The portrayal of personal struggle against tyrannical forces is historical fiction at its best, and perhaps translates to the balance of good and evil, law and justice in our democratic society today. John McDonough's delicious delivery creates a warm and artistic experience for the listener, a monumental accomplishment for an audiobook of this length. His rich and noble tones enhance the telling, from Cicero's formal arguments in court to his transparent emotions when he finds that the woman he loves is promised to another.
