Aside from making the typical British error of having an American sound too much like John Wayne, Richard Aspel provides a fine performance of the British characters in Gregson's murder mystery. He even offers a reasonable facsimile of the French/British accent spoken by the weeping widow. Excepting the not-so-grieving spouse, every suspect in the case works for the murdered real estate agent, and all have secret reasons to want him dead. Aspel skips along with the text, keeping pace with its fitful stops and starts. His voice reveals convincing disgust at the gruesome details of a second murder, and clinical boredom with the explicit bedroom scene of an adulterous affair. In the end, the only further question we need to have answered is: What will happen to the dog? R.P.L. (c) AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/ SEP 04]
