A YEAR WITHOUT A NAME A Memoir

Narrated with skill and aplomb by the author, this audiobook is a shining example of what memoir can be. It's an honest account of one person's ever-unfinished journey through and around gender, identity, and mental illness. It moves quickly, and, despite its often cerebral and self-conscious tone, nearly every sentence is sharp, full of importance. It is deeply intellectual and creative at once. Dunham openly navigates how confusing gender is--how arbitrary and yet essential. They're extremely self-aware, which is at times more of a burden than a gift. There's so much growth packed into a story that takes place over one or two very recent years. Dunham's narration is engrossing as they tell their own story with nuance and care.
