Narrators Christian Drerup and Rick Frederick deliver this short story collection with consistency and steady pacing. Soileau's stories present a candid view of Louisiana through an assortment of characters, many of whom make questionable choices as they encounter life's challenges. Drerup offers a believable accent that does not overpower the text, although some characters are more convincing than others. Her skill with the young female voices--and there are many--makes for performances as convincing as they are heartrending. Rick Frederick's powerful, enthusiastic voice leaps out from "Poke Salad" with all-encompassing energy but then settles down for a measured, dignified reading of "Haguillory." This is a good set of stories--narrated well. L.B.F. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2020]
