WHAT HAPPENS AT NIGHT

Narrator Christopher Lane's bleak tone highlights the melancholy and tension in Peter Cameron's disquieting novel. A couple known only as "the man" and "the woman" travel to Iceland to meet their adoptive son. As they acclimate to the unusual Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel, bizarre experiences disorient and provoke the couple. Lane adeptly captures their vulnerability and frustration, while his forceful and complex characterizations embody the eccentric townspeople with whom they form unique bonds. While the man grows more excited about the adoption and the woman is invigorated by the hope that she might recover from a terminal illness, the couple grapples with reality, selfhood, and the future of their relationship.
