St. Francis, born in 1182 in central Italy, started his adult life as a playboy with grandiose aspirations before he began the pattern of humble service to others we are familiar with. THE LITTLE FLOWERS was written by his followers 150 years later and describes his life and ragamuffin band of followers as if it were a Christian fraternity, complete with temptations, evil adversaries, and challenged loyalties.
