EPICTETUS Art of Living

by | Read by Richard Bolles

Philosophy & Religion • 1.5 hrs. • Abridged • © 1995

Excerpts from the work of the Roman slave and stoic philosopher Epictetus are presented in a new translation. The Reverend Richard Bolles reads this work in a voice that is, well, stoic. Not the stereotyped stoic, i.e. deadpan, but rather, calm, deliberate and even-paced. Indeed, this is a true example of presenting stoic self-control without being monotonous. Bolles's enunciation is clear, and the overall tone is one of a learned master lecturing to his disciples. As a postscript, there is an interesting interview with philosopher Jacob Needleman, which explains stoicism and the importance of the work of Epictetus for our times.
