DOG DAYS

by | Read by Glen McCready

Children Ages 10+ • 1.5 hrs. • Unabridged • © 2003

The theme of dog rescue brings together Clay, his brother Hal, and Gloria, a huge, golden dog. Dragged from the River Thames by the boys, Gloria is rejected and hunted by a number of unsavory characters. The epilogue contains a historical note that alleviates some of the somber messages of animal abuse in this work, and makes the listener grateful for its happy ending. Glen McCready's even and descriptive tone provides a calm background for some of the more distressing scenes of dog-napping, abandonment, and worse. The listener is in turn fearful, then hopeful for the brothers' success. In all, McCready gives a very good reading for a story focused on man's inhumanity to animals. L.D.H.
