This selection of four short stories, "What Gold Does to a Man," "The Ghosts of Buckskin Run," "No Man's Mesa," and "The Drift," is read with precision and clarity by Jason Culp. The various stories with their wide variety of cowboys, lawmen, and pioneer women present Culp with challenges to find appropriate accents and pacing to distinguish the many characters. However, his deadpan delivery essentially detracts from the stories. Culp's professional but dispassionate narration adds reality but does little to add to the tension or drama of L'Amour's graphic depictions of the romance and violence of the Old West.
