M.E. Kerr imbues her stories strongly with feeling and a sense of place. In this compelling story high school student John Fell reaches out of his depth and, in a sense sells his soul. Narrator Woodman does a splendid job translating all the undercurrents of the story to the spoken rendition of Kerr's work. There are vast social, educational and geographical differences in the characters, all of which are presented in a manner that enhances the text. Woodman does female voices very well; he also presents the young characters quite believably. Kerr gears her work for teens, however, most adults couldn't fail to become enthralled in the spell of this story. S.G.B. ©AudioFile, Portland, Maine [Published: OCT 94]
