Travel writing usually falls into two categories: advice on where to go and what to do and the more introspective and satisfying discussions of personal journeys. Blount makes sure to mention all the right restaurants and sights to see in his hometown of New Orleans, and, with the help of narrator Paul Boehmer, he captures the ambience of this much loved American city. If you’ve ever walked Bourbon Street at night, you’ve likely heard the street kids chanting the refrain that gives this book its title: “You got your feet on the street in New Orleans.” Blount’s personal recollections may seem out of place in a travel book, but in the end you realize that a great deal of New Orleans’ charm is a state of mind.
