Buzz Bissinger depicts the intensity of La Russa's responsibilities, ranging from the decision to retaliate when a batter is hit by a pitch to dealing with the unexpected death of pitcher Darryl Kile. Jeffrey Nordling's narration is perfect. His voice expresses La Russa's frustration when a pitcher doesn't listen or a talented hitter lacks competitive spirit. Nordling projects the suspense of a close game in a pivotal series and infuses the story of Kile's death with grace and gravity. Ballpark organ music adds atmosphere to this outstanding production.
