Amanda Root succeeds where many have failed. Her reading of this abridged classic doesn't leave the listener wishing for the complete version. Sensible condensation narrated in Root's clear British accent makes this recording a winner. Root doesn't attempt vocal characterizations for Anne Elliot, Frederick Wentworth, and those who influence their romance; rather, she focuses on intoning the emotions of Austen's characters. The fine quality of her voice, expression, and pacing places one in provincial England and brings fresh understanding to the strict conventions of courting in the nineteenth century.
