Jeannette Winterson interprets the story of Atlas the Titan for Cannongate's series of classic myths revisited. You will remember that Atlas is compelled to hold the world on his shoulders for eternity. When Heracles comes along, needing to steal some of the golden apples of the Hesperides, which Atlas guards, Atlas agrees to get the apples for him if Heracles will take over holding up the earth and heavens for a day. You can imagine how Atlas rethinks the deal once he is free of his burden. Winterson's version is full of sex, sass, and vinegar, and Dick Hill and Susie Breck do an elegant job of bringing these huge characters to modern life.
