Second son Ryder Sherbrooke travels to the Caribbean to his family's sugar plantation to investigate trouble with ghosts. On his first day in the tropics, Ryder meets Sophia Stanton-Greville, his 19-year-old neighbor, a notoriously loose woman who has unusual secrets. Anne Flosnik portrays Ryder as a warm-hearted upper-class male who is assured of his place in his world. Sophia is depicted as a helpless young woman one minute, a saucy wench the next. Not surprisingly, after Ryder unmasks the ghosts, he makes Sophia his wife and adopts her brother.
