This audiobook is a fascinating memoir. A spark ignited by the reading of an ancestor's 1868 diary started Carole Ione's eighteen-year quest to uncover her maternal roots. This audiobook was written and narrated by a psychotherapist, not a noted author or actor. Even under the auspices of a director, Ione's voice is halting and at times dull. But such flaws cannot negate this work's value. Most memoirs reveal the lives of extraordinary individuals or exemplary families. This work excels in its presentation of the commonplace and the ordinary in the lives of four generations of women in one African-American family.
