Though the title, with its reference to the lost space shuttle, may conjure up images of heroism and glory, this methodical novel keeps such ideals at arm's length, focusing instead on the personal foibles and failures of its characters during their time on Earth. Sam Freed is a solid narrator with a confident voice that strives to infuse the story with life. The novel follows a married astronaut couple and their jobs within the space program; the most interesting moments involve those jobs. Freed's comfortable reading is appealing and skilled, and the plot has some thrilling moments, but overall one can't escape the feeling that this production should be more exhilarating.
