ALIKI SAYS

With her Greek-Cypriot ancestry, Savvides brings Greek culture to life in this story of family secrets, rifts, and reconciliation. Liza and Aliki are cousins and best friends. During summer break Liza and her mother travel to Greece to bring the girls' grandmother home to Australia. Edwina Wren brings the girls to life with voices full of the snippiness, impatience, and confusion of teenagers. Grandmother, with her secrets, guilt, and confusion of memory, is also strongly drawn. But, without close attention, the listener may get lost as the story moves between the present and the past, uncovering the long-buried truth about the death of Aliki's mother.
